Paint your house - or plan your job hunt! -

Paint your home - or plan your quest for new employment! - This week, Im having my home painted. All around new paint, new hues. It has been some time. My companions realize this has been quite a while in coming. Ive been looking at painting for a considerable length of time! The main hindrance picking hues! For the inside decorators among you, this might be difficult to accept, however picking hues for a few key rooms in the house appeared to be a staggering issue. Imagine a scenario in which it looked terrible. What expected to coordinate? Or then again not coordinate? I had no enthusiasm for committing an error in my home. What did I at last do? I employed a specialist. Laura came in with her paint samples, asked me what I enjoyed and continued to clarify what she would suggest. She has seen the hues she prescribed to me in many, numerous homes. On the dividers! I confided in her thoughts and realized I could push ahead unhesitatingly. In any case, that wasnt all. I despite everything had a couple of decisions to make. I expected to get a few examples and perceive how I preferred them on the dividers. Be that as it may, being excessively occupied (I truly am occupied how would you think this blog gets written?!), I procrastinated. For quite a while. It wasnt until the painter I had said I would enlist got back to check in that I at long last went to take a shot at making last shading choices. It was simpler to TALK about creation a change than it was to really roll out an improvement. Shock! Does this sound like you? Not tied in with painting, however about your quest for new employment? Is it overpowering to try and consider beginning? I employed somebody to support me (attempting to accept my own recommendation to recruit a specialist). In any event, when I had my expert guidance, I despite everything expected to really make a move and push ahead. The equivalent is valid for you. Regardless, you should find a way to push ahead. Things dating apps teach about finding a perfect employer match

Things dating applications instruct about finding an ideal business coordinate Things dating applications educate about finding an ideal boss match Over and over, when overviews get some information about their occupations, the most well-known answer is the individuals. If you love the individuals and the business, the work itself is regularly pleasant. In a Kununu survey, one Adecco worker refered to huge, vast snacks, passes to nearby occasions, and associating with the representatives consistently as explanations behind being infatuated with this culture.Likewise, a Staples worker expressed, I have never been with an organization that I have needed to work my best at, 100 percent of the time. Why? [B]ecause the clients are dazzling and kind, as are my coworkers.Of course, regardless of whether you're perfect with a potential organization's kin isn't something you need to learn at work. How would you make sense of whether they're a decent match before tolerating an offer?Below are four things to remember as you scan for an occupation, propelled by the web based dating world:1) Be yourselfAs a blog on the dating application Hin ge puts it, In the event that you need a genuine, legitimate relationship, it's critical to the point that you present yourself in the most bona fide manner … Filters don't mean reality. Likewise, flashy photographs - like of you close to huge, savage wild creatures - are inauthentic. Indeed, Tinder jump started a hard and fast battle to end their clients' tiger selfies: Presenting close to a lord of the wilderness doesn't make you one, they wrote.Just the equivalent, overstating on your resume or introductory letter, or setting up a front that you're a specialist in something when you're not, keeps organizations from becoming acquainted with the genuine you. They may be dazzled by your achievements, yet they won't feel associated with you - which will eventually undermine your chances.Help organizations become acquainted with you by abstaining from clearing, dubious self-depictions. The internet dating webpage Coffee Meets Bagel prompts against utilizing straightforward modifiers like I'm entertaining, shrewd and kind. That doesn't inform a potential match anything concerning you with the exception of that you're unimaginative. In like manner, don't state no doubt about it: offer a concise tale of how and when you drove people. On the other side, ensure your potential match is no doubt, as well. Fruitful dating application matches Google and internet based life tail each other before they meet, so they know they're not getting hoodwinked; they confirm that the café they're meeting at really exists and isn't in a hazardous piece of town; they track down distortions, adulterations, and bizarre vibes.Give the equivalent wary eye to possible bosses. Understand audits and converse with associations who work there to check the entirety of the organization's general, obscure guarantees during the employing procedure. On the off chance that HR spouts about extraordinary advantages, request to see a rundown. On the off chance that your potential supervisor lets you know there's a lot of space for headway, get some information about the last individual they promoted.2) Seek comparable interestsSimilar interests are not misrepresented. At the point when you have restricted opportunity to go through with your life partner, you need to do stuff that you both appreciate. In one Bumble example of overcoming adversity, the couple's covering, irregular interests helped them hit it off and remain together: the two of them love the rec center, are climate nerds, and have fathers who are evangelists. The two of them have a solid Christian confidence and need their accomplice to, as well. Blunder's exploration shows that even individuals with comparable callings are pulled in to each other.Aim for comparative interests with your organization, as well. In case you will burn through 66% of your waking hours accomplishing something, it's critical to like it. What's more, what you like relies upon what your identity is. One representative at Fiber-Span Corpor ation was totally infatuated with working with clients on exceptionally specialized systems and field building answers for complex fiber optic and microwave radio system challenges. A worker at Dicks Sporting Goods stated, I am a games nut and this is a fantasy work! while a Barnes Noble worker expounded on work that was fun from start to finish: What could be superior to conversing with individuals about books, learning [about] writers, meeting scholars? It is a fantasy job.Look for circumstances that synchronize with work you've adored before. A representative at Points of Light Foundation Conference said that her activity was an ideal match since her experience and interests were in TV and network outreach, which is the thing that she did in her new position. It was fun and inspiring!Once you're at a meeting, similarly as you would out on the town, try to discuss the amount you share for all intents and purpose with the organization: you love what they love, which makes you an id eal match.3) Admit you like themBumble's SuperSwipe include tells potential matches that you're particularly intrigued by them. Their information proposes that men who use SuperSwipe on potential matches are twice as liable to get a match. Why? We like individuals who like us.In the dating scene, you let individuals realize you're keen on them by SuperSwiping, immediately reacting to their messages, communicating energy about gathering, or utilizing moronic, charming lines like, Free for espresso? Since I like you a latte! Whatever works. The same applies to work looking. In all honesty, Hailey Tully, the Communications and PR director at Vita Coco, told Bumble, You won't make it past the first round on the off chance that they don't think you truly need it.In your introductory letter and meetings, clarify why you love this specific organization. Disclose to them tales about the first occasion when you experienced their item, or clarify how you've generally adored their specialty and what you do now to take care of your enthusiasm for it. Tell them you're amped up for the position, you need to find out additional, and you need to meet them. Obviously, possibly do that in the event that you truly are energized. Much the same as dates, managers can sniff distress from over the Internet.4) Outsmart the wedding trip phaseIt would be intriguing to diagram the utilization of perfect partner through the normal couple's relationship. My conjecture is individuals use it most first and foremost. At that point they learn things about one another. He doesn't do the dishes. She's moronically meticulous and close-disapproved about her motion pictures. He deceives her. She's impolite to his mother. He's a sentimental on a fundamental level, damaged by his ex, and will do anything for one more opportunity. She's a control crack however everything comes from frailty and she's dealing with it. Over the span of a drawn out relationship, individuals discover that terms like perfec t partner are too simplifying. In vocations, as well, we set ourselves up for frustration by admiring possible occupations. Our fantasy occupations regularly transform into bad dreams, the same number of Kununu audits authenticate. I thought I had secured my fantasy position, [but it] immediately transformed into a bad dream because of absence of correspondence and very close inner circles, one Wealthmark Advisors Incorporated representative composed. Another, as CSC, whined, Truly can't state a lot of good any longer. Was before my fantasy work. Presently, I can hardly wait to locate another organization to work for. One Ford worker added that A great deal of recently recruited employees come in believing it's a cake stroll to a fantasy work, and rapidly adjust their perspective after the main full shift.Sometimes organizations, similar to individuals, truly change for the more awful. In any case, more regularly, the composing was on the divider. Recognize what you're getting into b y investigating the organization, perusing its surveys, and conversing with representatives who worked there or, far better, have as of late quit. No single record will be 100 percent precise be that as it may, on the off chance that you do balanced examination, you ought to get an exact sense. In the event that you haven't found any negatives whatsoever, you haven't done what's necessary examination. The key is to realize what the organization battles with so you can foresee it, or conclude that you can't endure that specific imperfection, before taking the job. With credibility, comparable interests, communicated energy, and sober mindedness, you can discover a match made in heaven. This article initially showed up on Kununu.

FlexReady Panel Insights

FlexReady Panel Insights Earlier this week, our FlexReady consulting team hosted an engaging panel discussion event at Stone Chalk in Sydney. The evening offered a rare insight into what flexible working success looks like, delving into how leading employers are embedding flexibility, uncovering the wide-ranging benefits, from gender equality to employee wellness and examining the challenges employers face along their flexibility journeys.   David Shirley, our Head of Consulting, hosted the discussion and was joined by three workplace flexibility champions â€" Lion’s Inclusion and Diversity leader Kate McRae Sermanni, FlexCareers Partner Ariane Virtue, and Head of Corporate Communications at AbbVie Kate Richards. Flexibility journeys David kicked off by asking our panelists what flexibility meant to them and why they had embarked on their flexibility journeys. As Head of Communications at AbbVie and also Co-Chair of the pharmaceutical industry’s gender equity group (PAGE), Kate Richards stressed how important flexible working practices are when it comes to building reputation and attracting talent within her industry. She also firmly believes we can’t achieve true gender equality in the workplace without embedded and normalised flexible working practices. And as Head of Inclusion and Diversity at Lion, Kate McRae Sermanni explained how she believes flexibility is the successful integration of work and life. Having personally enjoyed access to flexibility and a fulfilling career for over 10 years, she is passionate about the power of flexibility, what it means in terms of wellbeing, being our best at home and at work and the wider benefits to businesses and society. And for Ariane Virtue, although the benefits of flexible working are so far reaching, many employers don’t know how to embed and normalise it. Flexibility doesn’t have to be complicated: it’s just about how, when and where we work. It’s about changing and humanising the way we work, to make work, work. Ariane’s dedicated to unbundling the myths around flexibility that are still so pervasive within Australian workplaces. Benefits of flexibility David moved on to reflect on how organisations need to manage, monitor and report the benefits of embedding and normalising flexible work arrangements for flexibility to be advantageous and worthwhile. Ariane noted that flexible arrangements have to work for five groups of an organisation â€" for individuals, teams and leaders, the wider organisation and ultimately the customer. David touched upon the wider benefits for society and the environment. According to Ariane flexibility makes business sense. From graduates up to CEOs, men and women, young and old, employee engagement and wellness, loyalty, productivity and retention are all increasing. Not only are organisations retaining IP and expertise, but customer led organisations also retain valuable longstanding business networks.  Key takeaway: The benefits of flexibility are wide-reaching and will ultimately help you to drive productivity and reduce costs. Flexibility and gender equality All of our panellists agreed that flexibility plays a huge role when it comes to workplace gender equality. Kate Richards explained how AbbVie is a purpose driven organisation with equality at its heart, and you can’t have true equality without flexibility. She stressed how there are still so many inequalities around the male employee experience and how we all need to support our male colleagues to ask for flexibility too. Kate Richards also spoke about her work with the PAGE group and how the wider pharmaceutical industry wants to be known as an industry where everyone can be equally valued and rewarded. In her view, if they don’t get the flexibility piece right, then they won’t get the gender equality piece right either. Kate Sermanni agreed that the number of men now accessing flexibility at Lion is a true indicator of how inclusive their culture has become. Both panellists agreed that their organisations had made great progress around encouraging men to adopt flexible working. Key takeaway: If you don’t get the flexibility piece right to align with your strategies and purpose of your organisation, then you won’t get the gender equality piece right either. Flexibility achievements David went on to ask our panellists to name one thing they are most proud of when it comes to their work in the flexibility space. For Kate Richards, it’s AbbVie’s creative approach to flexibility which is so inspiring and rewarding. Employees access flexibility and are supported depending on their own unique personal circumstances. For Kate Sermanni, it’s the way Lion has been able to track and measure the success of flexibility with real analytics. She explained how the research and data she has been collecting in areas such as employee mindset and engagement helps to reinforce the business case for Lion’s flexible framework. And for Ariane, she highlighted how proud she is of the impact her consulting work has on Australian businesses, talent and wellbeing. She explained that organisations embracing flexibility enable employees to be the best they can be both at home and at work â€" mentally, physically and emotionally. Key takeaway: Flexibility is complex and everyone has their own unique experience of what flexibility success looks like. Making sure flexibility is genuine The discussion moved on to how people have to be cautious around whether an organisation offers genuine flexibility or whether it’s just ticking the boxes. Kate Richards explained anecdotally how when a friend asked her how to approach the topic of flexibility in a job interview, she simply told her to ask whether or not the CEO works flexibly. In other words, if you want flexibility to work it has to be role modelled from the top. She pointed out that having a CEO that leaves work loudly â€" “I’m leaving at 4pm to go to the gym” is so meaningful for other employees. If the head of an organisation is talking proudly about flexibility, then their employees can do so too. Kate Sermanni agreed that the key reason why Lion is able to retain great talent is because they have some really strong, very senior role models who work flexibly. This then demonstrates that there are flexible, long term career paths for all employees. Key takeaway: If you want flexibility to be successful, it needs to be modelled from the top down.   Barriers to flexibility success David then went on to highlight a number of barriers to flexibility success. Our panellists agreed that leadership lottery â€" when you work for a flexible employer but your line manager prevents you from accessing the flexibility you require â€" is one of the biggest challenges. Ariane pointed out that even if a manger has no need to work flexibly themselves, they need to embrace flexible practices for their team. It also comes down to a lack of trust where managers don’t trust employees to do their jobs effectively when they are not present in the office. Kate Richards also highlighted how flexibility equity needs to be addressed. She explained how there is still a prevalent belief that if we give this type of flexibility to one employee, and not the other, then it’s somehow unfair. But our panellists agreed that all elements of flexibility are not all appropriate for all roles depending on type of role and geographical location. It should be about having honest, open and adult conversations not about inequity, but about the reality of business. For Kate Sermanni, mindset is also a huge barrier for individuals who fear that if they request flexible work arrangements, they won’t be seen as committed or won’t proceed in their career so fast. She believes employers need to have conversations around flexibility and career succession planning, explore unconscious bias and challenge stereotypes around flexibility. She summarised by saying at the end of the day, we need to start saying yes to ‘flexsperiments’ â€" giving flexibility a go and then seeing where and how you can improve. Key takeaway: You need to eliminate pockets within your organisation who aren’t working flexibly by giving managers the skills they need to make flexibility work within their teams. It is imperative to train and coach your people to work flexibly, successfully. Lessons learned Finally, our panellists were asked to share the key lessons they had learned around flexibility in the last 12 months or so. Both Kate Richards and Kate Sermanni agreed that taking a change management approach has been essential due to the complexity around changing mindsets and behaviours. Kate Richards pointed out how organisations in the infancy of their flexibility journey often have the change management skills they need internally to embed flexibility effectively. For Ariane, flexibility is no longer about best practice â€" it now has to be about how ‘best practice meets best fit’. Organisations need to understand the business case and purpose for embedding and normalising flexible working and understand the why and how to be able to reap the rewards. Key takeaway: Flexibility has evolved from a nice-to-have policy to a core organisational philosophy or framework. It’s about humanising work for everyone. Let’s do this!

The 10 Most Overused Words on LinkedIn Profiles in 2013

The 10 Most Overused Words on LinkedIn Profiles in 2013 The 10 Most Overused Words on LinkedIn Profiles in 2013 Every year (at least for the last four years) LinkedIn has performed an analysis of all the English language profiles on its site. This year, with more than 259 million members, you can imagine how varied the list is. Shockingly, the number-one most overused buzz word on LinkedIn profiles in 2013 was used TWICE as much as the number-two word on the list. To be honest, the fact the word was used twice as much as the second word on the list was a surprise, but what shocked me even more was what the number-one word was! RESPONSIBLE. Oh, how I loathe that word on career- and job search-related documents and sites. Could there be a more useless word for someone to use? I have harped on the use of this word for years. Seriously, just go to the Great Resumes Fast blog, type the phrase “responsible for” in the search bar and VOILA!â€"a list of more articles than you probably care to read about the word “responsible” and why you shouldn’t use it on your resumeâ€"and what you need to replace it with. Other words gracing the top-10 list included: creative, strategic, effective, expert, driven, innovative, analytical, organizational, and patient. Patient was actually number five, and I have no idea how that could possibly be on the list. I guess LinkedIn didn’t either because they used an entire paragraph to explain just that one word. If you’re interested, here’s a link to the really neat infographic they put together on the article: http://blog.linkedin.com/2013/12/11/buzzwords-2013/ Now you’re probably wondering if any of these words are in your own profile (or maybe you know they are). But before you run off to check your profile, here are six tips for replacing those overused LinkedIn buzzwords. Substantiate your experience by using examples. LinkedIn touches on this tip in its article which I’ve included in the above link. Beyond substantiating your experience with examples, position yourself as a subject matter expert. There is a publications section within your profile. Use it to include links to blog articles or other articles you’ve written on subjects related to your area of expertise. Ask for recommendations. I’m not sure there’s a much better way to validate your experience and expertise than to have a third party vouch for you. Recommendations on LinkedIn lend heavy credibility tooâ€"because you can’t falsify that testimonial! Replace those descriptors with strong action verbs. Fortunately for you, I’ve assembled a list of 50 of them, which you can start using on your profile (and your resume) right now: http://www.greatresumesfast.com/blog/2012/04/23/50-strong-action-verbs-you-need-to-use-on-your-resume-now/ Stuck in a rut and not sure what to write? There are experts that help with that! Did you know there are many career professionals who are experts at LinkedIn profile writing and development? Here’s some more information if you’re interested in having an objective third party do the writing, developing, strategizing, and keyword and search engine optimizing for you. And, if you need more articles on LinkedIn profile development or leveraging your LinkedIn profile, here’s a list of great blog posts we’ve put together on the topic of LinkedIn and social media: http://www.greatresumesfast.com/blog/category/networking/ The most important point you should take away from the list LinkedIn has compiled is the increasing importance of setting yourself apart in a sea of others who all get caught in the same net when using the same buzzwords day in and day out. Break the cycle, show examples, validate your expertise, and give your audience what they’re hoping forâ€"a great candidate who’s the perfect fit and does not conform to the mold of masses. Why Employer Branding Sucks ( What to Do About It)

Why Employer Branding Sucks ( What to Do About It) Whats all this buzz about employer branding? According to  Hung Lee, the founder of recruiting tech platform Workshape, it sucks. He says EB is broken and the candidate experience is currently pretty crappy. Struggling to attract the right types of high-quality talent? Read on for a summary of Hungs cold hard truths on where youre going wrong, and how to fix things. You can also listen to our full interview on iTunes  or  SoundCloud. Why is employer branding broken? I think if you take employer branding as part of a general sort of attempt to position the business and kind of a way to improve your brand presence, for instance, get customer awareness, get all those types of good stuff, then fantastic. I think, to a large extent, the investment that we put into employer branding largely misses the point. And whilst I think its one of those things where I think I value the sentiment, and I totally understand companies being very committed to, you know, presenting the right image, but I think it still doesnt generate great candidate experience on the other side if you think about it. You know, you get lots of companies spending a lot of money building their so-called employer brand, but the fundamental mechanics of how a person experiences that brand, as a candidate, hasnt changed. And that is still quite a negative and frustrating experience for the vast majority of people. Employer branding sucks? Ive mounted an attack on employer branding and I want just qualify that. You know, I dont think its wasted energy per se, but I think a large part, employer branding is designed to improve the experience of the candidate because how can you, you know, have great employer branding if you make your candidates miserable or the applicants miserable? But theres a lack of understanding that its actually the applicant flow itself that creates the negative experience. So, if companies could do a much better job focusing on how they deal with people that interact with their brand after theyve acquired them, thats how you would improve the experience overall. And the key to that is not to force them to apply. What should employers be should be doing instead? my biggest problem with employer branding is that its sort of the front end of what is the standard recruiting funnel. If you look at most, whatever companies do, however innovative it is, ultimately, the call to action is, Oh, apply to this job. And once that person applies to that job, you know what? Straight away, youre dropping in recruitment form on him or her, and that is literally a very processed and reductive activity which I think most people dont welcome. Now, I think you can get away with it when youve got an audience that is, you know, highly interested in job discovery. Where  do they start? So, caveat number one is every company is unique. So, youve gotta start internally. You know whenever you see a best practice blog or article out there, you always get kind of a tidal wave of negative response, no matter who actually produces it. And the reason why that is, is because best practice assumes that every company is kind of a venture same. And of course, they arent. So, first thing to do is to understand what your company is in terms of, you know, how interested you are in this activity. Youve gotta analyze, for instance, how many people youve got involved in managing recruiting. Like, is it a priority? Lots of companies say, you knowthe rhetoric is, Im sure, you know, everyone says, Oh, our people are the most important part of our business, but lets see whether that maps to reality. Is the budget there for this? Is there people in charge of talent on the top table of the business? You know, what is the commitment of it? What trends should we keep an eye on? 1. Artificial intelligence I think you need to look at artificial intelligence. And by this, I mean automated recruiters, automated job search agents. These are kind of little programs that are trying to solve the discovery problem in a totally different way. Its not about search, its not about ads, its not even about what we do, which is match. Its about basically empowering a digital agent to go out there and find what you want for you. Now, I think that is going to be a hugely interesting segment. 2. Blockchain if you like, a macro trend as to where we are is blockchain. I think a lot of people dont quite understand how blockchain tech applied to the world of work. But to kind of dumb it down to a level where it shouldnt go, but sort of for the sake of, you know, trying to do a quick explanation, blockchain is essentially the technology which allows you to track transaction but also protect the identity. So right now, its predominantly used for financial transactions, you can trade with it, bitcoins, etc. But of course, its clearly applied to the world of work. Imagine if youre in a situation where you produced a brilliant bit of copy, Jorgen. You ideally wanna track that copy wherever it might be replicated. Why could you not get a royalty for that? Right now, thats impossible for you to do. But with blockchain tech, that allows you to do it because its public ledger of the content that youve produced and the structure youve produced it. Suddenly, you can start seeing workers basically usi ng blockchain tech to validate that, Yes, I am the owner of this bit of labor and I should be paid for this labor. Thats gonna have huge, transformative effects society-wide, I suspect. 3. Digital predictions And the third major trend would probably be another application of AI. But rather than using agents, I think were gonna get to the point where we do have the ability to predict fit and performance based on what this persons behaviors and digital footprint might be. And this goes way back for you and I, Jorgen, when we were, you know, first looking at social media influencing and all of this type of stuff. And those signals at that point were very crude, you know? How many followers? was more or less the measure. But were getting to the point now where I think theres so much data that everyone produces, inevitably produces, that you know, were not even aware of.

Resume Writing for Career Change - VocationVillage

Resume Writing for Career Change - VocationVillage A lot of people believe that resume writing for career change means that you use tricky resume formatting to hide the skills gaps for whatever experience you dont have and that you can rely on transferable skills to convince hiring managers and recruiters that whatever you did in the past is relevant to what you want to do next. I have long suspected that these resume strategies dont work! To investigate this question, I recently showed employment experts a specific resume for a career changer, Mary, who wants to move into web project management.Mary has been job hunting for a full-time web project management position for three years. She is frustrated because she has a lot of experience with technical project management, but she isnt getting invited to interviews for what she really wants to do.Marys previous career experience includes freelance production of television commercials, videos, PowerPoint presentations, and printed books. Mary has also taken some classes in XHTML and CS S. Her new job objective is to manage web projects. The positions she seeks have titles such as Interactive Project Manager or Creative Web Manager. The feedback Mary has heard most frequently is that she is being held back by her lack of advertising agency background and experience managing websites. Marys job search is stalled because she doesnt have the exact history of accomplishments that hiring managers want to see, and the hiring managers arent buying her assertion that she has sufficient transferable skills to learn the new job.To assist Mary, I interviewed hiring managers, recruiters, and career coaches. They reviewed Marys resume and then generously shared their best tips for resume writing for career change. Their suggestions for Mary can help any stuck job seeker because it helps to see how employers and employment experts think. (To protect Marys privacy, I am not publishing Marys resume online, but I include sufficient context that the suggestions still make sense). He re is career advice for Mary and for every other job seeker who is faced with the task of creating a resume for career change:Paul Bailo, CEO of Phone Interview Pro: It is a mistake if your resume never specifically uses the titles of your current career goals, Interactive Project Manager, or Creative Project Manager. You should definitely include the titles you are pursuing.Dont put irrelevant information on your resume because it makes it too difficult to follow. Focus it more and pare it down to one page.If you want to be a doctor, you go to medical school. If you want to be a Project Manager, you get PMP certified. To get some relevant web-based experience, create a web company and be the PM for the companys website development. Make sure it is a GREAT website.Linda Ziemba, VP Sales and Marketing for LiveLOOK, Inc. , provider of innovative collaboration solutions designed for online sales and service:To get web-based experience, one suggestion is to get involved with an enterprise development center that runs a program connecting potential employees with start-up companies. You can volunteer with a few companies to demonstrate your capabilitie s, get the experience potential employers want, and determine if you like the company. It may lead to a full-time position or worst case, fill in skills gaps.Kristen Harris, Co-Founder and Owner of Portfolio Creative, a workforce innovation firm:Employers read resumes VERY quickly. They skim, really, looking for specific words, phrases, previous employers, software, and skills. They do not generally take the time to interpret or try to decipher things that are unclear. You have to be concise and clear or you likely wont be invited for an interview. When writing a resume for career change, dont list skills that are not specifically relevant to the position you are seeking now. For web-based project management, include skills such as Interactive Project Management, Creative Team Management, Client Relations, Multimedia Productions, Creative Project Management, Interactive Agency Experience, Budget and Schedule Management, etc. This list must match closely the skill list of the position being sought. Otherwise, you lose the employers attention and they move on to the next resume.Look for positions that build on your previous background. If you have worked mostly on the client or company side rather than the agency side, look at larger companies that have or are building internal web and multimedia teams. They dont care as much about agency experience; in fact, having internal company experience could be a bonus or them. You have some good experience but it is getting lost in all the experience that isnt so relevant. Be more targeted. Check out job postings and employer websites to see what keywords and phrases they use. If you have done that same type of work, call it the same thing. Right now you are asking them to do some interpretation and make assumptions about whether your previous work is the same as what they do.Bruce A. Hurwitz, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer, Hurwitz Strategic Staffing, Ltd., executive recruiting and career counseling.First, only apply for jobs for which you are qualified. Since I dont see the titles, Interactive Project Manager, or Creative Project Manager on your resume, I can only assume that the job descriptions on your resume dont match the requirements listed on the ads. When you say you have, Professional Consulting Experience, this can be code for, I cant get a full-time job. Many of my clients want candidates with corporate experience, not self-employed experience. Dont lie, but if you DO have experience being an employee, definitely highlight that.Your resume has keywords on it that arent the same keywords sought by employers who want to hire Interactive Project Managers. Your resume should begin with a Selected Accomplishments section and it should have five or six bullet points geared toward the jobs for which you are applying. That way, you are framing the discussion around your candidacy and the HR Director will know why you should be considered. You may be a victim of age discrimination. Yo u dont list graduation dates under Education so the assumption may be that you are old.In the past 10 years, you have had 7 jobs. You have never been unemployed but you are a jumper and that is definitely of concern to employers. There is one typo. There are plenty of employers who reject applicants because of one typo on a resume.Laurence Shatkin, Ph.D., Senior Product Developer, JIST Publishing, a Divison of EMC/Paradigm:If you want to manage a creative development project in the field of interactive media, you need a technical background. Employers will not hire you on the basis of management experience or a track record of creativity if you lack credentials in technical skills.Jack Williams, VP of Sales and Recruiting for Staffing Technologies, provider of information technology and telecommunications resources for both large and small companies:The word freelance shows up way too often in your resume. Prospective technical employers might see the word freelance as someone who wo rks only occasionally. Consider changing this throughout your resume, from Freelance Producer, to something like, Video Producer, or Digital Video Producer. When resume writing for career change, you have to know the current lingo. The word digital is hot within creative agencies. The reason is most agencies are developing online content, the majority of which can be online or on TV simultaneously. So the word digital is the buzz word that could put you on the map. Consider changing your title from Producer to Digital Producer and just as important, dont describe past employers as boutique firms, which simply makes your experience seem too small or too specific. You can say small digital design firm. You seem to be someone with good experience but you are using very marketing-ish descriptions of past companies as if they make sense. Instead of using marketing verbiage from your previous employers websites, shorten the descriptions to things like digital design firm with a focus on med ia and technology, and then include the URL for these companies. Hiring managers of creative people want to see a portfolio and/or work samples. The websites for places youve worked and been successful are the places to start marketing yourself.Amy Segelin, President of Chaloner Associates, a national executive search firm with offices in NYC and Boston:From the looks of your resume, it is fairly generic and frankly I dont see much evidence of interactive work or successes so I am not surprised that you are not being considered. I encourage you to cull out some specific examples of your work in the online space and talk about them in the appropriate section. If you dont have that type of experience, you wont be qualified for the job.Ad agencies will definitely want agency experience. I encourage you to look at in-house operations that offer a mix of traditional and online design requirements so that you can more easily parlay your experience while learning new skills. To recap, if Ma ry wants to optimize her resume for career change, she likely needs to add to her skills and to more specifically target her resume.I recommend that any stalled job seeker get this type of feedback from people who are industry experts. Even if their advice is sometimes difficult to hear, wouldnt you rather know what decision-makers are thinking rather than continue to throw resumes into the black hole of the hiring void? Many times the antidote for job search paralysis is better information so that you can take effective action. So if you are stuck in your job search and you arent sure what to do next, get busy asking people for help and advice (not jobs) it works!
